Audience analysis, as one of the fundamental principles in the process of religious preaching, plays a decisive role in the effectiveness of the message and the realization of its guiding objectives. Any educational message can achieve its intended outcome only when it is accompanied by an accurate understanding of the audience’s level of comprehension, spiritual needs, cultural conditions, and social context. The Holy Qur’an, as the central text of Islam, presents a prominent example of a purposeful and audience-centered system of preaching in which the diversity of rhetorical and thematic approaches is shaped according to the diversity of audiences.
The present study, employing a descriptive–analytical method and focusing on the Medinan verses of the first Juzʾ of the Holy Qur’an, seeks to demonstrate how the social and doctrinal structure of the community of Medina, as well as the various categories of addressees, influenced the style of address, the type of argumentation, and the content of legal rulings. The findings indicate that in the Medinan verses, Qur’anic discourse is organized on the basis of a precise typology of audiences.
With regard to believers and new converts, the Qur’an adopts an educational, motivational, and legislative approach. While reinforcing foundational beliefs such as faith in the unseen, the establishment of prayer, charity, and righteous deeds, it also articulates a set of devotional, ethical, and social rulings intended to organize both individual and collective life. This method enables the nascent Muslim community not only to consolidate its internal convictions but also to attain structural cohesion and a coherent social identity.
In contrast, hypocrites are introduced through an expositional yet indirect approach. Rather than concentrating on identifying individuals, the Qur’an delineates the behavioral and intellectual characteristics of hypocrisy, including inconsistency between speech and action, false claims of reform, and the mockery of believers. This pedagogical strategy enhances social awareness and fortifies the community against the subtle and gradual infiltration of hypocrisy without exacerbating overt tensions.
In addressing polytheists and deniers, a rational and dialectical method becomes prominent. On the one hand, the Qur’an presents the challenge of producing a chapter comparable to it, thereby
