In representing social groups, the Holy Qur’an does not confine itself to describing their beliefs and actions; rather, through linguistic and narrative strategies, it also formulates their social identity. One of the most prominent groups in this regard is the disbelievers, who are portrayed in various verses with traits such as denial of the truth, disputation, mockery, self-superiority, and influencing others. The present study seeks, drawing on Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory, to analyze how the social identity of disbelievers is represented in the Holy Qur’an. Within this framework, concepts such as role performance, impression management, self-presentation, the social stage, and the gap between outward appearance and inner reality constitute the basis of analysis. The research method is descriptive–analytical, and the data are selected from verses in which disbelievers appear in dialogical, action-oriented, and confrontational situations with prophets, believers, or other audiences. The findings indicate that the Qur’an does not represent disbelievers merely as deniers of truth; rather, it depicts them as social actors who seek to preserve their position on the social stage through performing specific roles, managing audience perceptions, concealing the truth, and displaying power and superiority. Beyond explaining the behavior of disbelievers, this representation also has a norm-setting function and highlights the boundary between faith-based identity and disbelief-based identity. Accordingly, Goffman’s dramaturgical theory can provide an effective framework for understanding the social and communicative layers involved in the Qur’anic representation of disbelievers.dentity and disbelief-based identity.
